Alright, let’s talk about this jorts thing. Jean shorts. For men. Yeah, I know, I remember a time when you wouldn’t be caught dead in them, or at least, I wouldn’t. Seemed like something from a bygone era, and not a particularly cool one.

My Own Little Jorts Journey

So, I started seeing them pop up again. Noticed a few guys rocking them, and honestly, it didn’t look half bad. These weren’t the super tight, really short ones I remembered. Nah, these were different. A bit longer, looser, more relaxed. And with the weather getting crazy hot, I thought, well, maybe there’s something to this.

I didn’t want to go out and buy a pair right away. Felt like a bit much for an experiment. So, I dug through my closet. Found an old pair of jeans, you know, the ones that are perfectly worn in but maybe have a stain or a small rip somewhere you can’t really wear them out anymore. Perfect candidates, I figured.

Getting Down to Business

First thing, I laid them out flat. Grabbed some scissors – just regular kitchen scissors, nothing fancy. I sort of eyeballed where I wanted the cut. I was aiming for just above the knee, maybe brushing the kneecap. Definitely not too short. I’ve seen that go wrong.

  • I tried them on one last time as full jeans, to get a feel for where my knee was.
  • Then I made a small mark with a bit of chalk I found.
  • Took a deep breath. And then I just went for it. Snip, snip, snip.

The first cut, not gonna lie, was a bit ragged. One leg ended up a tiny bit longer than the other. Classic. So, I spent a few minutes evening them out. I wasn’t aiming for a super clean, hemmed look. I kind of wanted that frayed edge. It looks more casual, more deliberate, if you know what I mean.

After the cutting, I threw them in the wash and then the dryer. That really helped to fray the edges up nicely. Made them look less like I’d just hacked them off five minutes ago (even though I pretty much had).

The Real Test: Wearing Them Out

Okay, so now I had these homemade jorts. Time to actually wear them. I kept it simple. Plain t-shirt, a pair of comfy sneakers. Stepped outside. Felt a bit strange for the first ten minutes, wondering if people were judging my leg-wear choice. But you know what? Nobody cared. Or if they did, they didn’t say anything.

And man, they were comfortable. Way more breathable than full jeans in the heat. That was the biggest win for me. Suddenly, running errands or just hanging out on a hot day felt a lot less sticky and gross.

I found that the key really is the fit – not too tight, not too short. And what you wear them with. Keeping the rest of the outfit pretty basic seems to work best. It’s funny, I went from being a jorts skeptic to actually making my own. I’ve even done it to a second pair of old jeans since then. They’re just practical, and honestly, I think they look alright if you do them right. Who would’ve thought?
